Today's offering is a sad little one. A life ended almost as soon as it began. I feel I ought to follow up with some pithy observation about enjoying every day we have on Earth, but Ididn't enjoy the one I had today, and now that I have posted a Dead Bird I am going to bed with a book.
(Marian Keyes, that is how bad it is...)

You can tell quite a lot by looking at this photo. The species (little blue penguin) will give you quite a precise idea of the location of the beach it washed up on. You can see by the big poorly rolled up trouser cuffs that I am not a fashion victim. The fact that my second toe is longer than its neighbours (a physical particularity for some reason more evident in Real Life than in this photo) indicates that I have an refinded creative personality. Another clue: I am white. And I like birds.

The swift spends most of its life in the air. From the moment the young bird dives out of its nest, it will migrate, feed, drink, mate, and sleep on the wing. So adapted to a life on the wing are swifts that their feet have atrophied to become almost useless. No matter. Swifts do not walk, hop, jump or strut. They are beyond – above – that. And when they fall, they fall flat.

Sorry, can't remember anything about this photo. It must have been in the southern hemisphere, if it was taken in January. But I couldn't even tell you the species... But I can tell you, it's dead.
